- eBike ride and walking orientation tour of Füssen
Today's Alarm Clock
A lovely thing about Castelrottos is hearing the Bell Tower chime away. However, this morning at 6AM sharp, we heard huge cannon sounds, "BAM!", "BOOM!"; Luckily, the hotel was kind enough to leave out a flyer on this occurring. The hotel explained:
"In South-Tyrol, the "Boellern", a gun salute, is tradition as a sign of joy on special occasions such as the 'Kirchtage' (the kermis). This is done in order to drive away evil spirits and to begin the upcoming period with good omens. PLEASE DO NOT SCARE" We did also hear this while sitting outside at the hotel the night before at 7PM while having a dinner of foods we picked up at the Supermarket, but we were still startled this morning! We could do nothing but giggle as we sat trying to stay calm at the suspense of the next firing. |
Breakfast
Another lovely breakfast within Hotel Cavillino D'Oro, in this cozy apres-ski themed nook within the hotel; breakfast of meats, cheeses, breads, yogurts, coffee.
Few last moments around town
Church Day in Castelrotto
Having some time in the morning prior to the departure to Füssen, we explored around and inside Parish Church of Castelrotto including the cemetery behind the church.
Parish Church of Castelrotto- "Pfarrei Kastelruth"
Today was Church Day, where locals were dressed in traditional attire, on their way to attend church.
Up here you straddle the border of Austria and Germany. On the German side is the golden cross you see below, which is a modern replacement of the original that was brought up by a priest and his friends in 1851. We had planned on hiking to the golden cross prior to arriving, but it was too crowded and with that, it looked to steep and risky to try. We enjoyed the views regardless!
Arrival in Füssen, Germany
We checked into hotel "Zum Hechten" - Altstadthotel & Restaurant and quickly stashed our bags in our room and set out for ebikes!
Some members of the tour joined up with Axel to rent some ebikes; We did not plan to do this but decided, if not now, when! We rides bikes at home, but this was our first experience on ebikes. We all did a short bike ride around Füssen together.
After riding bikes in Salzburg, this has become an unexpected joyful way to explore a European city!

Quick Group Orientation Walk - Views of Füssen
Dinner Time
Just after our quick Füssen orientation tour, we took a moment to grab some food at Am Rathaus, Bio Pizzeria - Bio Eiscafé, just across a cobble-stone cladded road from Benedictine monastery of St. Mang.
A "Then & Now" Moment
Today's "Wow" Moment
Spectacular clear views today at Zugspitze; loved getting higher up in the mountains and seeing some alpine snow - Troy |
As mentioned before, I had the best German teacher in high school and I recall learning about Zugspitze in that class. Finally being able to visit it was a great moment of connecting classroom teachings with real life experience - Ashli |
