Schrannenmarkt -Farmer's Market
We came upon this plentiful farmer's market, Schrannenmarkt, on our way to the Mirabell bus stop to catch the bus to go to Berchtesgaden.
Loacted in the forecourt of St. Andräkirche, this market has been offering regional goods since 1906.

Berchtesgaden, Germany
About 50 minutes by bus, Berchtesgaden, Germany makes for an easy day trip getaway. We caught the bus, not far from the hotel. Troy is especially interested in WWII history, so we went to Eagle's Nest - "Kehlsteinhaus", Hitler's Mountain Retreat that houses a documentation center, elaborate bunkers, and other points of interest.
Berchtesgaden National Park Area
Eagle's Nest is located in the Berchtesgaden National Park Area offering stunning views and access to the hiking area, where, if you have plenty of time, you can hike up here from trails leading below. Even if history doesn't exactly entice you, the alpine beauty sure will! We both found the beauty of this area to surpass what we expected to find at Eagle's Nest. We would definitely visit this area again for hiking as well as to fit in a visit to Obersalzberg Documentation Center and Bunker and the Salt Mines.

German Alpine Wildflowers
First sights of colorful Alpine Flowers! Day 2 of the Rick Steves Tour and Ashli has already accomplished her goal of seeing wild alpine flowers! The bright blue Gentian reminds her of her first trip to Germany, where she bought a bracelet adorned with Edelweiss and Gentian flowers.
- While I am no certified botanist; I have captioned some of the flowers throughout this scrapbook using "A Field Guide to Flowers of the Alps" by Ansgar Hoppe as my guide.
- The occasional butterfly photos will be included as well, because they're beautiful and there are over 250 species of butterfly in the European Alps! 🦋
A Tiny Part of Mönchsberg Walk
With our trusty "My Way Alpine Europe" Rick Steves book in hand, we started off our evening on tiny part of the Mönchsberg Walk, to get to the Augustiner Beer Hall. We got on the walk from Muellnersteg pedestrian bridge just after Cafe am Kai.
We will have to save visiting Hohensalzburg Fortress and doing the full Mönchsberg Walk as first priority next time we visit Salzburg. This little bit offered lovely views and historic sights.

Augustiner Beer Hall - "Augustiner Bräu Mülln"
At the foot of the Mönchsberg, in Salzburg’s Mülln neighbourhood, is the golden beer hall of Augustiner Beer Hall. Beer has been brewed and then enjoyed amongst social circles since 1621. The beer garden seats around 1,000 people. The shaded large beer garden was a perfect remedy for this hot start to summer and we were ready to surrender to its allure!
As always, "Prost!"
Stumbling Stones - "Stolpersteine"
The “Stumbling Stones” by Gunter Demnig were conceived as an art project for Europe, intended to keep the memory of the victims of National Socialist terror alive. In Salzburg, the first brass cobblestones were laid in 2007 – today, several hundred of them memorialize the fates of people who were expelled or killed. The project, which has existed since 1992, actually encompasses around 60,000 stones in some 1300 cities.

Today's "Wow" Moment
Learning about WWII in school, reading books and watching videos into adulthood, it has been fascinating to see history in front of my very own eyes; to be standing where these events unfolded is very humbling experience- Troy |
Being in the mountain of Eagle's Nest was a surprise for me as I enjoyed that unexpected little hike along the ridge; to see alpine wildflowers already on day 2 of the tour was a delight- Ashli |
